Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much does it cost?
A: Global Potential is not a fee-based program. There is no cost to participate in the program, however we do ask that students fundraise $300. We will help you with the fundraising strategies.

Q: What travel documents do I need?
A: You must have a valid passport.

Q: Where do you go in the Dominican Republic?
A: We go to rural villages in Barahona, a province in the southwest of the DR near the Haitian border.

Q: Do you go anywhere besides the Dominican Republic?
A: This year we are expanding to Nicaragua.

Q: Who goes with the students?
A: GP staff accompany the students on the trip abroad and live in the village with the students.

Q: Can I visit my family while I am there?
A: In the past, students have been able to arrange to have their families visit them in the villages where we work. However, this is not guaranteed and should not be the reason you join the program.

Q: Can I call my family back home?
A: Once a week we travel to the city where students can email and update their blogs.

Q: Where will I stay?
A: Students live with local host families in their homes. Houses are very simple, and may be different than what you are used to.

Q: Can I bring my ipod?
A: No. We discourage students from bringing electronics and valuable items. The community where we work is very poor and there is no need for expensive items.

Q: Is it safe?
A: Yes. GP has created strong links and trust with the communities we work in. We take all safety precautions.

Q: How old do I have to be?
A: Students must be 16 years old, but we will accept applications from students who are 15 if they demonstrate a high level of maturity.

Q: Are there meetings I have to attend?
A: Joining Global Potential is a 16 month committment. Four months prior to the trip, students begin weekly leadership training sessions after school. For nine months after the trip, students are involved in occasional meetings and community engagement activities.

Q: My parents would like more information about the program. What can I tell them?
A: Parents of students at International High School can attend an informational meeting on December 7 at 6:00pm in room 418. Please stay tuned to when parents of students at Bushwick Academy for Urban Planning can attend a meeting on. Parents can also contact GP Executive Director at frank@globalhood.org or GP Deputy Director at sarah@global-potential.org

Who are our youth?

The youth selected to participate in Global Potential are from low-income, hard-working families who are seeking to provide their children with a better future, a good education, and access to opportunities that will keep their kids on a path to a good job.

By giving them the chance to exercise their power as change-makers and resources for their communities, Global Potential hopes to improve the lives of not only the youth, but of their families and their communities.

Our selected youth contribute their unique perspectives as youth who believe in the power of dialogue, participation, and transformation at the personal level they will inform and inflence the process of community development.
