International High School at Prospect Heights

IHS@PH is a primary partner and the source of participants for our pilot program in 2008. Originally Gates Foundation funded, the interdisciplinary project-based curriculum enables students to learn to think critically and navigate societal constructs. We have been working with their Special Programs Coordinator and the School Principal to integrate Global Potential into the school’s first senior class year. The students get internship credit for participating in the program, and our training workshops are conducted at the school, during after school sessions. We worked with their inaugural senior class in 2008, in the school’s first years. IHS@PH is a member of the well established International Network for Public Schools.
Their student population comprises individuals from 39 different countries, speaking 22 different native languages, all of whose families are new immigrants. Many of them arrived in Brooklyn as refugees from difficult circumstances, and are seeking to integrate into a healthy and safe community here. All of the parents of the youth live below the poverty line. The ethnic makeup of the school is: Latino 34.8%, East Asian 19.7%, South Asian 10.8%, Black 20.3%, White 12.9%. The students live in Prospect Heights, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Flatbush, East New York, Crown Heights, and Queens.
