International Youth Foundation

Sarah Gogel, Deputy Director of GP, was among 20 outstanding young social entrepreneurs selected as 2009 YouthActionNet® Fellows. Launched in 2001 by the International Youth Foundation (IYF) and Nokia, YouthActionNet® seeks to develop a new generation of socially conscious global citizens who create positive change in their communities, their countries, and the world.

The 2009 Global YouthActionNet® Fellows traveled to Washington, D.C., USA for a weeklong leadership workshop on November 1-8. Each was recognized for their efforts at the Annual YouthActionNet® Global Awards Ceremony and had the opportunity to network with leading international organizations.

Where the six young adults from the GED program at New Heights Neighborhood Center are going there is no electricity, and the people are desperately poor. Over a period of 45 days, the 17- to 24-year-olds will help teach English, help build houses, and participate in health workshops in Tamayo, in la Provincia Independencia, in the Dominican Republic. Although we did not make the final cut, we were pleased to receive this note from UNESCO’s Best practices in youth policies and programs in Latin American and the Caribbean project, “It is our pleasure to inform you that after a rigorous examination of over 600 registered practices from over 30 countries of the region, your initiative “Global potential” has been pre-selected as a best practice in the work with and for the young people of the region.”
