30 Visits in 2 Years
In 2009 and 2010 we carried out over 30 site visits in Nicaragua to identify our first host community there, and 2010 was our first year, working in the community of El Hatillo de Sebaco. In 2011 we continued working in El Hatillo and in 2012 we opened up in Las Minas, not far from El Hatillo, on the same mountain in the department of Matagalpa. Our National Coordinator in Nicaragua, Jessica Salazar, has worked with GP for two of its Dominican Republic trips and is very familiar with our policies, mission and vision. We are working very close to the Municipality of Sebaco, in the Department of Matagalpa. We have some exciting partnerships with the following organizations: Amycos, Junta de Castilla y Leon, Habitat for Humanity, World Vision, Fundenuse, Movimiento Comunal Nicaraguense, Prodesa, the Mayor’s office in Matagalpa, Fadese, Fibrese, Instituto Nicaraguense de Promocion Humana, Fundacion NicaFrance, American Nicaraguan Foundation.
El Hatillo
Youth Conference 2011
GP has partnered with El Hatillo in 2010 and 2011. In 2012, a community facilitator was located in the village to maintain links, work on development projects and organize that year’s youth conference. El Hatillo is 10km from Sebaco, 40 minutes in bus, 20 minutes in motorcycle. It is a very small village with around 200 people. It has approximately 35 youth under 13 years of age, 70 youth between 13 and 25 years old and 80 inhabitants older than 26 years old. It was founded 200 years ago and recognized in 1984. It suffered massive destruction due to Hurricane Mitch in 1998. It has a local youth group called “Poder Ciudadano” and bases itself off of agriculture. It is principally a catholic village, and people spend time playing baseball, soccer and dancing. Women clean clothes, cook, take care of the children. The local school is run by Maryuri Hipolita Velazquez but there is no high school. The closest high school is in Molino Sur run by Julian Escobar, Paz Jiron Poverdo and Sandra Mairena Torrez.

GP first partnered with Las Minas during the summer of 2012. Las Minas’s coordinates are 12° 48′ 4″ North, 86° 0′ 30″ West. It is high up in the mountain, approximately 20 minutes north of El Hatillo up the mountain. The climate is cold during July and August. Las Minas has around 200 people, with 130 people older than 24, 60 between 15 and 24 years old and 120 younger than 15 years. In Las Minas, people love to play soccer, billiards and baseball. Many people go to Costa Rica in the summer for work for 3-6 months. Harvesting coffee, banana, sugar cane, pineapple. It is a very united community.
